See you later India, Bonjour/Hallo Switzerland!!

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

If everything goes well, in about 48 hours from now I should be aboard the flight to Mumbai (BOM) from where I will be saying “Bye Bye India” for quite a few months to come at least. Its that time when one meets up with friends, family and exchange wishes, get blessings from the elderly and the usual running around that one has to do before a relocation. When I first mentioned about this move here, it seemed a long way ahead but here it is.. Just under 2 days left.

Trying to time our jump footsteps Ashish with the baby alligator The scenic ECR highway Just perfect holiday :-)

Last weekend was as memorable as the before one, since a couple of my good friends Ashish and Amit biked down to my place to spend the weekend. Yes!  You read it right, they drove from Bangalore to Chennai on Rane’s Thunderbird. We went on a drive on the Scenic East Coast Beach Highway stopping at Crocodile Bank and Taj’s Fisherman cove. A nice and relaxed weekend it was. For the entire flickr set click here (until the pic with the gun was taken this time) . Ashish has already blogged on it in his new blog here.

It was just not about food, travel and picnic last weekend. Hacking got its fair share too. Some updates below.

  • Commited the gnusim8085 changes done at the Bangalore Hackathon to the svn after a quick re check. Thanks Onkar.
  • Tested the gnusim8085.exe package for Windows. Works great with a few minor issues (like Syntax highlighting, url linking etc.). Also a installer for the same is in progress. Check screenshot here
  • Onkar has already ported gnusim8085 to gtksourceview 2. Seems like quite a few clean ups also done.
  • VHDL Emacs mode was packaged for Fedora by Rakesh Pandit and Review request even raised. But only to find out later that it was already a part of emacs-common. I was deeply disappointed at that quality of search done by me before raising that wishlist request. But then, everybody has a bad day. Sorry Chacha_Choudhary.
  • gResistor upstream has now uploaded a fresh tarball with the full copy of the licenses included. So I have updated the package on revu. But seems like it is already too late for intrepid. But I must thank Pop Gheorghe for the update.

ToDo : We have been hit by the Wine bug 3915. If someone has faced this issue and managed to fix this please leave a comment. If we dont get this setup right, it will be very difficult for us to go in search of a Windows machine to test our gnusim8085 whenever we have to make a release. Have attached the screenshot of the issue above. Thanks in Advance.

And finally, see you from Switzerland. And do follow me on Identi.ca as I will be posting updates more frequently there until I get settled in the new country.

Shivanasamudram and Talakad trip

Monday, August 20th, 2007

Last Saturday, I was part of a 15 member gang heading towards Shivanasamudra and Talakad. The gang was none other than my office mates. The trip kicked off with me pulling a argument with my office security for not allowing me park my cycle because I was wearing shorts and he did not allow me in. What the hell!! I have worked in office with shorts many times in the past 2 years and where did this *new* rule come from??? After some quarrel, he then allowed us to park the cycle inside. Somebody tell this moron “Security” that this is not a firm that has “Dress Code”!!! Actually the trip started a bit on the dull side (atleast for me); may be because I had passed the same place on Bikes during the Independence trip or may be my body was begging for rest from the excess work and traveling that I have been doing for quite sometime. To top it, Shivanasamudram was kinda disappointing. The falls is amazing and all, but where is that excitement????

Just relax talakad temples

After reaching talakad at around 1330 hrs, we started playing volleyball, frisbee and dived into the river to play a game of water polo :) Yeah, the trip’s mood changed. We had lunch and then headed to explore the temples of the nearby forest area. The architectures and sculptures are really worth mentioning here. Returned back to Bengalooru at around 10 PM.
“Biking is more fun”

Independence Trip - Four bikes, Eight People, One mission!!!

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

August 15th, 1947 - India became free!! August 15th - 2007 - 5:00 AM; the mobile starts singing the lovely “Nare Nare..” song. I pick up the call and the person at the other end shouts “Abey, Ut jah. Paanch baje” (Translation: Dude, get up, its 5 already!!). There we were on the bikes outside our homes at around 5:45 AM ready to start the journey which everyone of us were waiting for. Its the Independence day and we are off to Bheemeshwari (A nice Fishing, nature camp on the river banks of Cauvery) naming our trip as the Independence trip - “Express your freedom and relax, Have fun”. We were joined by 4 other friends and off we all rode away from the concrete jungle; Away from any signs of software. We stopped for breakfast at Kanakpura (40Kms from Bangalore), after which we rode like crazy “Wild Hogs” enjoying the beauty of mother nature combined with the wonderful cloudy, cool weather.

We reached the camp only to find out that people without booking were not allowed inside. “What the fscking hell!!! WE had called up and this rule was not mentioned!!!” The last thing we wanted was to just return back. Thanks to Nagendra, who somehow convinced the manager and guess what we were on our way to experience “White water rafting”. Yay yay!! Its a lot of fun and very relaxing. After the amazing 8 Km rafting we relaxed on the hammocks, ate lunch and wandered around for sometime. We started our journey back to Bangalore at around 3:30 PM and reached Bangalore at around 6PM. We had made several pit stops while returning. I repeat and will keep repeating - It is fun! It is fun!!!
